Beauties by James Duthie

Image
I just finished reading ‘Beauties’ by James Duthie. The book was published last year by HarperCollins.  First off, I have to say it was a fun read and liked it a lot. Also, I must admit a bias. James Duthie is TSN broadcaster covering many sports but mainly hockey. Having watched him for years it feels like he’s a buddy. Duthie comes across on air as personable, professional, witty and is obviously a sports freak - which is my kinda guy - and these attributes come through in the book.  In the hockey world someone who you would say is a ‘real character’ is also referred to as a ‘beauty’. ‘Beauties’ is a collection of stories revolving around the world of hockey. 57 stories in fact. All first hand recollections from players, broadcasters ,coaches, trainers and others. The kind of stories you might hear sitting around with friends having a beer.  There are not only tales from Crosby, Gretzky and Orr, but also  from Duthie’s TSN  panelists Noodles, Dregs and ...

2021-2022 Hockey Season

Image
Hi Everybody, Good news! The 2021-2022 hockey season is ON for the Sens! Starting with the home opener against Toronto  on October 14th  and stretching for a full 82 regular season games against all 31 league teams. 29 of these games are at home, I’ll be there, will you? Hopefully, those 82 games will just be the start - I want to see them in the playoffs this year too. With new draft picks Tyler Boucher, Zack Ostapchuk, Ben Roger, Oliver Johansson, Carson Latimer and Chandler Romeo the old lines have been shaken up and I’m hoping to see some fresh plays.  The number 10 pick Tyler Boucher - a right wing player coming from the US national team development. At 6’1 and 201lbs Tyler is a powerful player - and based on his 2020/21 season, he can score.  The number 39 pick, Zack Ostapchuck - a centre player who is coming up from the WHL.  He’s a young kid, but I’m excited to see what he can do.  The number 49 pick, Ben Roger  - a defensive p...

EURO 2020 Matches

Image
I’ve been following the EURO 2020.  Over the last two days I’ve watched the following 4 matches. Monday at noon Spain beat Croatia 5:3 in overtime. Monday at 3pm Switzerland beat France 5:4 in overtime. Tuesday at noon England beat Germany a nail bitting 2:0.  England is my team. Tuesday at 3pm Ukraine beat Sweden 2:1 in overtime. My MVP on the England squad is Declan Rice from West Ham. I’ll be rooting for England in the England vs Ukraine match on Saturday July 3 at 3pm.

Toronto Loses Against Montreal in Game 7 of the Finals

Image
I was booing both teams but I was especially booing Montreal because I follow the Sens. It was a nail-biting game. Montreal won over Toronto. Boooooooooo! Despite Montreal winning, I am still rooting for a Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup. Canadian teams don't often win the Stanley cup but I think it's about time that they do! I'm looking forward to Game 1 between the Montreal Canadiens and the Winnipeg Jets. I am rooting for the Jets - I need the Canadiens to lose at all costs.

Network Battle for NXT

Image
WWE vs USA for NXT Today is an exciting day in the world of wrestling. It was announced this morning that NXT will be broadcasted on the USA Network instead of the WWE Network. Wrestling fans everywhere are anxiously awaiting tonight’s episode of RAW where they will be announcing the new NXT show that will debut on September 18th. There are some mixed emotions about these changes. Here I will explain the pro’s and con’s and this network switch. This change could potentially acquire many new wrestling fans. By having NXT broadcasted on network television, this allows non-wrestling fans to stumble upon the channel and it may grab there interest. This could also bring back some ‘old school’ wrestling fans as well. Another benefit would be that viewers would not have to be subscribed to the WWE network in order to watch this show. The stock market shows that since the announcement this mor...

Interviewing Former NHLer and Ottawa Native, Blake Dunlop

Image
Interview with Blake Dunlop Last week I had the pleasure of interviewing Blake Dunlop. Recognize the name? If not, here’s some info about him.  Blake Dunlop was born in 1953 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He grew up in the Ottawa area. Blake was an outstanding hockey player, he played four season with the Ottawa 67’s, leading the league in points in the 1972-73 season. In the 1973 NHL draft, he was picked 18th overall by the Minnesota North Stars. After being traded the the St. Louis Blues in 1979, Blake started to experience his most successful NHL years. After five great years with the Blues, Blake was traded to the Detroit Red Wings, where he would retire after one season with them in 1984. Throughout his career Blake played 550 NHL games, getting 130 goals  and 274 assist for an impressive 404 career NHL points.  I’d like to thank Blake for taking the time to answer these question for me, it is greatly appreciated. Now sit back, relax, maybe grab a c...

Welcome Back Ron!

Thank goodness that Rogers and Hockey Night In Canada are finally thinking with their heads. Getting rid of George Strombolopoulous and Glenn Healey was the best thing they've done in a while. I can't wait to have Ron MacLean (together with the one and only Don Cherry) as host of Canada`s favourite sports television show. As hard as Strombo tried, and he did give it his best, it was apparent to everyone that his knowledge and appreciation of hockey was limited. And under his watch, the show was way too gimicky. He was picked by Rogers because he was younger than Ron and Rogers was trying to appeal to a more hip generation. Guess what? It didn`t work. Moreover Strombo`s too tight suits always looked ridiculous. So Rogers wisely is going back to the tried and true Ron MacLean -- a very safe pair of hands who loves the game. His knowledge of hockey history and tactics is unsurpassed in our country. And let`s face it -- the ratings with Strombo and co were way way down. So Rogers i...
